Checking In

I’ll admit it.  I’ve spent the last couple of days trying to think of something to say.  Part of it is The Thing, which is ongoing as we speak, and still in a very bad place, but it’s also that it turns out that I respond very badly to stress physically.  The cold, or whatever it was, is back, or half  back, and I’m so tired most of the time I can barely think.

And I can’t read.  I actually lost the Milosz book.  I was only about half way through.  I’ve tried some other things, but I keep sort of drifting–I gave a shot to Ann Coulter’s new thing, and I keep forgetting to put a bookmark in it.  It’s the oddest thing.  I don’t often agree with Coulter, but she tends to be easy to read and a big fan of linear thought, so it shouldn’t be difficult, but it is.

So I just thought I’d say I’m sorry for being out of the loop for so long.

  1. It’s trite to say that these things too will pass but, while I rack my brain as much as I can, All I can think of are even sillier platitudes.

Just know that we care for you and will be here to “listen” if and when you need to vent. Until then, just look after yourself and don’t worry about meeting any self-imposed blog schedule.

  2. My sympathies on your troubles. I hope at least the on-going situation is resolved soon.

As a result of serious long-term medical problems in my family, I’ve had my share of disasters. My personal coping methods during the crisis are 1) Reading an old favorite book, preferably under a quilt with a cat or two snuggled up. That way when my mind drifts off, at least I’ll know what’s going on when it returns, and the familiarity is soothing. And the cats help with the cold. 2) Writing stream-of-consciousness everything I’m thinking and feeling until my brain is empty–and then destroying the pages without rereading them. And 3) Cinnamon rolls. There’s a reason they call it comfort food.

I hope you can find things which work for you.

Did you know you got a terrific boxed review of Living Witness in the February 15 Booklist?

    Good luck with everything.

  3. I could not read Coulter. I picked up one of her books from a library display table and tried to browse through it – I think it was something about the way she expressed herself that got to me more than what I think she probably meant. One of the few other authors who had the same effect on me was Spong. I’d think almost any author would be more absorbing than Coulter!

I don’t know what else to say other than the usual platitudes. Good luck, take your time – I miss your blogs, but I know you’ve got a lot to deal with at the time, even if I don’t know (or need to know) all the details. Hug a cat (although if yours are like mine, they only want to be hugged on THEIR terms!), and keep trying until you find something more distracting than Coulter to read!
