Turkeys

with 3 comments

I was a little startled to get an e-mail this morning complaining that posts on the blog had been rather scarce lately–it didn’t seem that way to me, since I thought I’d been writing nearly every day.

But maybe it’s true.  If it is, it’s nothing in particular–I’ve got a copyedited manuscript that I’m late getting back because having the cold for that long put me behind, and it’s the end of the term at my place so everybody is freaking, and Thanksgiving is coming up and I have to wrestle with chestnuts.

If anybody knows how to get roasted chestnuts out of their shells without leaving on just tons of that fuzzy crap, I’d like to hear it.  Martha Stewart does hers in the microwave, and I’m thinking of trying it this year.

So if I haven’t been writing much, that’s why, and I’ll get back to it in a day or two.

And the really odd thing is, I keep wanting to get around to something else:  why it is you can’t say I ever decided that I didn’t (or did) believe in God, and why I do, in fact, deliberately read things that I think might change my mind on that subject (and on several others I’d call seminal to my “philosophy of life”) on a regular basis.

But it’s a very long story, and it’s six o’clock and it’s running late.

  1. Okay, the turkey here is whoever complained.

I figure every blog post is a gift, a gift of your time, interest, and engagement in the conversation that goes on here. I’d never dream of poking anyone (other than my spouse, who is obligated) and demanding, “talk to me!”

I’d been thinking that you’d been posting *more* than usual, nearly every day for a few weeks. Bloggers (including me) have lives, have sh** happen, and aren’t on any damn schedule to please the readers.

Post when you can. I miss it when you don’t, but that’s my issue to deal with, not yours to solve.

  2. Never had the fuzz trouble. I always pierce the chestnuts before heating, and sprinkle a few drops of water on them. I do NOT know if this is related. I do sometimes get a paper-thin and crisp lining of some sort, whic comes loose if you rub the shelled chestnut between your fingers.

As the turkey in question, I was expressing concern. Complaints are–trust me–noticeably different, and I don’t complain to people who don’t owe me anything.

  3. No comments on turkeys or chestnuts. I’ve been in Australia for so long that Thanksgiving no longer means anything to me.

I thought the blog has been busy but we are still waiting for a report on Sam Harris. :)

Off topic note on modern life. I’ve been advertising my spare room in a couple of find-a-roommate web sites.
So far I have gotten 2 replies from “28 year old woman” who turned out to be scammers. One using counterfit American Express travelers checks and one varient of the classic Nigherian Scam. Neither got any money or bank account details.
