Let’s Do This
Meaning this.

Let’s do it NOW.
Let’s stop talking about how awful everything is and nattering away about “microaggressions” and whatever else, and do this.

Even my husband, who loves me dearly and who was an aerospace engineer (you’d think he’d be more space-oriented), looks somewhat askance when I start one of my “the future of humanity lies in space, that’s where all the energy, raw materials and living area is” rants.
I think one of the primary reasons we have this somewhat encysted, self-involved, ready-to-be-offended-at-any-moment culture is that *there is no more frontier* to absorb the discontented, the feeling-crowded, and the ambitious among us.
My son wants to design space habitats. I want to live in one. Why don’t we? (hint, the people with the money will NOT invest in the long term. They can barely see more than the next quarter)

We need the money to solve the problems on Earth. Remember how much better the world became when Apollo was abandoned?

Serous engineering projects are done for the remainder of this cycle. They have demonstrably right and wrong answers. To our current rulers, there can only be matters of opinion, and only their opinion counts.
As for the sort of cheap space flight which might let malcontents live somewhere else–these are the people who invented “escapism” as a term of literary derision: they don’t want their subjects even to IMAGINE living beyond the reach of the present rulers.
I used to think we’d see planetary colonies in my lifetime–then my son’s. Now I think my grandchildren will have to recite to their Movementist teachers how racist/sexist/hegemonist or whatever the space program was as the price of school-leaving certificates.
In time, this too will pass. But none of us will be there for the passing.
